Paws4Art is a fine arts studio, owned by partners Donnasue Jacobi and Fred Roessler. They have been creating fine art photography together since 1985. Fred creates his fine arts photographs using traditional film and darkroom processes. He concentrates on visual images to capture the character of older forgotten places and times. Fred also specializes in pet portraits and uses a digital camera for pet portrait montages that Donnasue uses to design a personal photography book of your day with them and your beloved pets. He loves working with dogs to create a lasting imagery of beloved pets. His photography is offered for private and corporate collections. Donnasue is also a print maker and book artist/designer. She combines her love of design, hand-bound bookbinding, and photography to teach fun art classes for most age groups and skill levels. She also accepts commissions for a wide variety of custom books and greeting cards for personal and business needs.

Body Parts Gallery
Gallery One - Body Parts
This was a project of Fred’s doing very up-close photos of our dog’s different body parts. Sunny’s Ear worked as a beautiful abstract. In Sunny's Eye you can see Fred’s reflection. All prints are gelatin processed with Erik hand-painted.

Books Gallery
Gallery Two - Books
My definition of what books arts is – a form of art, taking the shape of a book and expressing a story, thought, picture, or comment using varied materials. It can be a traditional book shape, or hang on a wall or be a sculptural object. The point is that you want people to look at, touch, and enjoy a “book” in a variety of designs and shapes, with or without words. I enjoy making books because I love the smell and feel of the papers, paint and glue – when combined, for me, it’s a scent of vanilla – and I love that making them can help me disappear into a world all my own.

Candy Caddies Gallery
Gallery Three - Candy Caddies
Hostess candy gifts, single or dual test tubes filled with chocolate mints. Great for giving as thank you gifts to clients, friends or family. I can create custom colors or themes for parties or other celebrations. These make great party favors.

Cards Gallery
Gallery Four - Cards
I make cards for all occasions using stamps, gold leafing (or silver, copper), ribbons, buttons, found jewelry pieces, and anything that looks interesting.  I also use photographs of my hand colored photos and other prints. I can coordinate card designs with other paper gift items, such as wedding or baby shower events.

Clay Monoprints Gallery
Gallery Five - Clay Monoprints
CLAY MONOTYPE is a print making technique using liquid clay slip that was developed by artist, Mitch Lyons, over 20 years ago. The liquid clay slip is colored with pure pigments and applied to a leather hard clay slab using various direct painting and transfer methods. When the image looks complete, it is transferred to a non-woven fabric substrate with a wooden roller or the back of a metal spoon.

Creatures Gallery
Gallery Six - Creatures
This was part of the Willowside Ranch Project where all of the hanging animal decorations around the garden were photographed.

Dog Portraits Gallery
Gallery Seven - Dog Portraits
This was the beginning of Fred taking pet portraits back in 1990. We called all of our friends to bring their dogs over for a session as this work was going to be installed in a gallery show. Everyone had a fun time.

Dogs at Play Gallery
Gallery Eight - Dogs at Play
This photographic project stretched my artistic and technological abilities to learn about my digital camera and create that one composition that focused solely on the movement of a dog’s body who was playing with total joy at top speed. During these 50 days I calculated that I shot between 20,000–40000 pictures with my Nikon D70 DSLR. I set the camera to auto mode and just fired away. Many of the pictures could be used in a flipbook that would give the appearance of an old fashioned movie as the pages are fanned. I think I ended up with about 3000 good shots from which the final 50 were selected. Editing each dog’s session was the most difficult as many did end up being very cute and showed the strength, speed and personality of the dogs.

Filoli Gardens Gallery
Gallery Nine - Filoli Gardens
We have been members of Filoli Gardens on and off for about 10 years. I have always admired the intricate botanical drawings and paintings. As my own skill as an illustrator is limited, I use photography as an expression of creating my interpretation of botanical representations of flowers, trees and other plants. Many of these end up being painted as I love the process whether it’s Fred’s photograph or mine. Painting gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in my studio for hours of uninterrupted quiet time. Of course my Rottweiler is always by my side.

Florals Gallery
Gallery Ten - Florals
Donnasue loves to explore local neighborhoods looking for flowers to photograph in unusual settings. Climbing vines and small bunches of weeds get extra attention and when a gelatin print is done, they are often hand-painted.

Historical Towns & Parks Gallery
Gallery Eleven - Historical Towns & Parks
I enjoy photographing the outdoors of historical places, such as Willow Creek Ranch in Pescadero. The character and charm of wild blackberries winding through the windows of older forgotten buildings on this ranch lets you see the world through a gentler view. Another favorite among photographers are Bodie and Alviso, once a thriving port town in the South Bay of San Francisco.

Horses
Gallery Twelve - Horses
I have always loved horses from the first time I started to ride at age 10. There was a time and space that I could spend an entire day with the horses on a ranch just outside the San Fernando Valley. A day filled with riding, learning about them, grooming, walking around the spring stream, and just hanging out with my horse of the day. I usually asked for an older white stallion, as he loved the carrots I brought him and was a real sweetheart.

Hostess Match Box & Candle Gift
Tired of the same old bottle of wine when you are an invited guest? These hostess candle sets come with 2 small candles and a decorated box of matches that are refillable. These can be decorated for any occasion and I’m happy to make these gifts for any occasion of your choice. They make nice customer appreciation gifts.

Inner Gardens
Gallery Fourteen - Inner Gardens
Inner Gardens was a projesolo show at Gallery House, a coop gallery in downtown Palo Alto, CA. I walked around nearby neighborhood and focused on plants and flowers and did extensive studies of them and created close-ups in silver gelatin prints that were painted by my partner, Donnasue and myself.

Landscapes Gallery
Gallery Fifteen - Landscapes
Fred enjoys travelling around to local parks and preserves looking for old growth areas, exploring less travelled paths to discover beautiful places all within a day’s drive. We are lucky to live in an area where there is so much beauty to enjoy.

Lavender Sachet in Gift Boxes
Last year I planted French Lavender and had a bumper crop. I harvested the flower stalks, dried them and made lavender sachets packaged in small boxes – they smell really good, if you happen to like lavender. These make lovely gifts for any occasion, birthday, anniversary, party favors, “just because I love you.” I dried the bunches in my garage and filled a lot of sachet pouches. They needed a special little gift box of their own. This is a seasonal gift and depends on what nature brings me.

Recycled Calendars Gallery
Gallery Seventeen - Recycled Calendars
Mini accordion fold books are made from beautiful prints from calendars. The art is too beautiful to throw away, so I make mini accordion books with self-closing covers. These books measure 1.5x3.5 inches. They come with self-closing wrap-around covers and can be displayed anywhere you want – on a mantle, or bookshelf. No two are the same.

Still Life Gallery<
Gallery Eighteen - Still Life
A continuation of the study of photographing flowers close up to reveal delicate details of the plants.

Sunflowers Gallery
Gallery Nineteen - Sunflowers
Donnasue was part of a small group gallery show at the Pacific Art League. She selected photographing a bunch of volunteer sunflowers in a neighbor’s yard and the project included sunflowers from very first buds to the death of the plants. The series was processed as gelatin prints and some were sepia toned and many were hand-painted.

Trains Gallery
Gallery Twenty - Trains
Fred has always had a fascination for trains especially old steam locomotives. He had an opportunity to photograph many local trains in the late 70’s and most of these trains do not exist anymore. He also had a chance to photograph the San Jose round house.

Willowside Ranch Gallery
Gallery Twenty One - Willowside Ranch
Here was a photographic retrospective of Fred Roessler’s photography from 1995-2007 of historic Willowside Ranch in Pescadero. A beautiful selection of the buildings and farm equipment, animals, as well as the old cheese house and its cheese presses. Far from the corporate world of Silicon Valley is Willowside Ranch. Located in Pescadero, this ranch was originally started in 1870; sometime later a Swiss family named Mattei, set up a dairy farm and sold milk and cheeses.
